Gigi Mariani - Italy

Gigi Mariani explores the potential of metals and infinite possibilities of transforming their original properties and aspect in order to stretch the scope of what can be achieved. He avails himself of ancient goldsmith techniques that have fallen into disuse, such as niello and granulation, personalizing them in order to give his work a distinctive character. He works mainly with precious metals such as gold or silver and combines these occasionally with iron, copper or brass. In recent times he has been applying niello so as to completely cover the surface of metal. The preciousness of the metal is concealed beneath the niello, leaving way to a dark, rough surface. His works take on the aspect of an ancient relic as they present a rough, uneven, cracked surface. The precise, geometric forms are counteracted by the spontaneous way of treating the surface of metal with niello, as if it were a canvas, resulting in works that are are primordial and instinctive.
