Carl Dau began training as a goldsmith at the age of 23. He later studied design at Berlin University of the Arts and has been one of the pioneers in modern minimalist jewellery. Stainless steel, sometimes combined with precious metal, plays a central role in his work, which has been honored with several State Prizes. Dau has always had an interest in making serially produced jewellery. The first series produced at the beginning of the eighties were graphically dominant. The influence of objects of art on these first series was apparent and they were often small wall objects. The preferred shapes were circular, triangular and square, offered in various material combinations and a variety of graphical structures. Since the the year 2000, his pieces have increasingly featured colored surfaces. His art is not limited to jewellery making, as he also makes larger scale wall pieces and sculptures.
